At the MOL Duna Refinery in Budapest, Hungary, environmental responsibility is not just a requirement, but a core value. With increasingly strict EU discharge regulations and escalating water treatment costs, MOL Group needed a solution that would go beyond compliance.
The Challenge
MOL Group sought a high-efficiency wastewater treatment system that could lower operational costs, reduce environmental impact, and increase water reuse without compromising the refinery’s performance.
The Solution
Ovivo | Alar delivered a customized treatment setup featuring two 15-meter dissolved air flotation (DAF) systems, each capable of treating 1,000 m³/hour of oily wastewater.
These systems were integrated with a Cyclic Activated Sludge Separator (CASS) to manage multiple wastewater streams, including refinery effluent, groundwater, and domestic wastewater from employee facilities.
Key Results
- Over 98% oil and grease removal efficiency
- Treated water quality that surpasses EU discharge regulations
- Noticeable reduction in environmental burden fees
- Lower operating costs and minimized regulatory risks
- Support for MOL’s long-term strategy to eliminate Danube water extraction
Setting a New Standard
This implementation does more than meet regulatory expectations. It establishes MOL Duna as a leader in sustainable refining. By transforming wastewater into a valuable resource, MOL Group is driving innovation and long-term environmental performance.
