Ovivo has hit a significant milestone in the battle against PFAS contamination.
In November, an Ovivo PFAS Solutions pilot unit was successfully shipped from E2metrix’s facility in Sherbrooke, Quebec, to a municipal wastewater plant in the Northeastern United States.
This advanced system is a key development in tackling the persistent environmental issue of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), often referred to as “forever chemicals” because of their long-lasting presence in the environment.
PFAS are not only commonly found in water sources near industrial facilities or firefighting foam sites, but also can appear in some of the most unexpected places. These chemicals have been detected in food packaging, such as microwave popcorn bags and fast-food wrappers, as well as in household products such as nonstick cookware, waterproof clothing, and stain-resistant carpets.
The Ovivo PFAS Solutions system features two groundbreaking technologies:
- Olift™ foam fractionation is designed for PFAS removal and concentration on-site. Featuring Evocra’s patented technology, Olift provides cost-effective and sustainable PFAS treatment solutions for municipalities and for industries throughout the United States and Canada.
- Obreak™ electro-oxidation is an innovative process for PFAS destruction featuring E2metrix technology. Obreak is designed to provide high destruction efficiency in a variety of water treatment applications.
Together, these technologies offer a comprehensive approach to addressing PFAS contamination by both removing and neutralizing these harmful substances.
The Northeastern United States pilot project will focus on treating landfill leachate, a type of wastewater that often contains elevated levels of PFAS. By testing this solution in a real-world setting, the project aims to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the PFAS removal and destruction process, with an eye on minimizing environmental impact and improving public health outcomes.
The piloting phase of the project is underway and scheduled to continue through January 2025. During this period, operators will monitor and evaluate the system to ensure optimal performance and to gather valuable data that will help refine future solutions for PFAS treatment.
Ovivo and E2metrix are committed to advancing water treatment technologies that address emerging environmental challenges. Expect more updates on the latest developments and insights as the pilot progresses.
